Demand Progress, Demand Equity

VOTE PAUL ROESLER FOR SCHOOL BOARD ON JULY 19.

ABOUT this group:  we are parents, community members and teachers who favor equitable classrooms and facilities for all students, regardless of zip code or family income. Pay attention to the July 19 special election. The current board is split 3-3 on VERY IMPORTANT issues regarding the district’s future, and that of City High.

We believe:
City High’s vitality contributes immeasurably to the quality of our neighborhoods.

The Save Hoover effort endangers the future of City High and indeed the future of all other schools in need of upgrades and additions, outlined in the Facilities Master Plan.

Students in all schools deserve equitable academic offerings, learning environments, and extracurricular activities.

How is this related to City High?
Saving Hoover is at odds with plans to position City High, long-term, as one of our three comprehensive and competitive public high schools.

The Save Hoover coalition on the school board recently overturned balanced secondary boundaries adopted last year. This change will create wealth disparities among our high schools.

Candidate JP Claussen wants to save Hoover and has voiced possible support for differentiated programming among the high schools, and possible support for removing sports facilities from the City High footprint. This could diminish City High as a competitive 4A high school over time, both academically and athletically. We do not support boundaries that will lead to higher concentrations of poverty in two out of the three high schools (City and West). Boundary imbalance will further inequity and accelerate current patterns of affluence in the northern part of the district (Liberty High).

PAUL ROESLER has been ENDORSED by Iowa City Mayor Jim Throgmorton and North Liberty Mayor Amy Nielsen.

Paid for by Progress For ICCSD. Supporters of this effort include Cindy Abrams, Diane Berwald, Marianne Davenport, Mara Goodvin and Dan Shaw. Not affiliated with Roesler campaign.
